Rural Bank of Cauayan, Inc. gets introduced to the MABS Approach

Fifty senior officers and staff of the Rural Bank of Cauayan, Inc. participated last August 22 in the senior management orientation by the USAID-supported Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) Program and Punla sa Tao Foundation, one of the MABS service providers.

The orientation is an introductory course on the MABS Approach Training and Technical Services, a systematic step-by-step training and technical assistance package provided by MABS service providers to support rural banks as they develop the capability micro-loan, micro-deposit, money transfer and other financial services to meet the needs of microentrepreneurs and low-income households.

RB Cauayan has total assets of PhP 361 million and 16 branches in Region 2 and is now interested in developing microfinance services.

RB Cabugao introduced to the MABS Approach to Microfinance

DSCN2780Five senior managers and credit operations officers of Rural Bank of Cabugao attended the Senior Management Orientation (SMO) of the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) Program last August 5.

This orientation provides an overview of the RBAP-MABS Program and the MABS Approach to Microfinance to bank officers and key personnel. Succeeding modules include market research, product development, loan administration, pilot testing, and operations review.

RB Cabugao was established in 1969 and has grown to ten branches across Ilocos Sur. The bank serves more than 4,500 borrowers and 5,100 depositors and it is currently interested in expanding its market outreach by offering new microfinance services.

MABS orients the Cooperative Bank of Cagayan on the MABS Approach to Microfinance

SMOThe USAID-supported RBAP-MABS Program, together with Punla sa Tao Foundation (Punla), one of the three MABS Service Providers, conducted a senior management orientation (SMO) for the Cooperative Bank of Cagayan on June 21 to introduce the bank to the MABS Program and the MABS Approach to Microfinance.

Twelve officers from the bank’s board of directors, senior management and microfinance unit attended the activity as part of the bank’s initiative to expand its market and improve its existing microfinance operations.

The senior management orientation is the first among several modules of the MABS Approach, and is intended to introduce key bank officers to MABS initiatives and best practices in market research, product development, loan administration, savings mobilization and delinquency prevention and management.

Mr. Alan B. Orogo, Deputy Executive Director of Punla, also presented an overview of their training program and other initiatives. The bank is preparing to engage Punla for an Operations Review of its existing microfinance program, as well as for the MABS Approach Technical Training Services (MATTS).

EC Bank introduced to the MABS Approach

Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. Six senior officers and staff of Enterprise Capital Bank (EC Bank), a rural bank, were oriented to the RBAP-MABS Approach to Microfinance during the Senior Management Orientation (SMO) conducted by the USAID-supported RBAP-MABS program on November 8.
The presentation by MABS showed the accomplishments and best practices of the MABS Approach that has worked with many rural banks in the industry. “This made us interested to tap RBAP-MABS to assist EC Bank in scaling-up its microfinance operations,” EC Bank President Aurelio Paulo Bartolome said.
EC Bank presently offers a group loan product called “Ocho-Negosyo” to microenterprises in urbanized areas where it operates. The bank was established in 1998 and has total resources of PhP 75M. It has two branches and a satellite office located in Taguig City, Metro Manila.
The SMO is the first of the MABS Approach to Microfinance modules that introduces bank officers and key personnel to MABS initiatives. Implementing the MABS Approach has helped strengthen the capability of many rural banks to profitably provide financial products and services to their microfinance clients.

Rural Banks expanding Mobile Phone Banking Services via local merchants

Seven of the country’s leading rural banks participated in a senior management consultation meeting to support the expansion of mobile phone banking services under the USAID-supported RBAP-MABS Program held at the RBAP Office in Manila on August 25. Building on the current achievements and outreach of the rural banks in providing mobile phone banking services, the Mobile Phone Banking – Channel Management, was introduced to the rural banks to support, sustain and manage their efforts in providing greater access to banking services in the countryside via mobile money and mobile money cash-in and cash-out outlets (CICOs).
This new initiative aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of applying channel management approaches in mobile phone banking by engaging mobile money CICOs as merchant partners of the banks. Working with mobile money CICOs as partners is expected to significantly expand and increase the availability of mobile money to support mobile phone banking transactions of rural bank clients. In the process, participating rural banks will improve their capability to profitably service their customers particularly in rural and remote areas.
Top officers and representatives from Agribusiness Bank, Bangko Kabayan, Cantilan Bank, First Valley Bank, Green Bank, GM Bank, and PR Bank interacted with officers from the RBAP-MABS Program, Mercy Corps, MICRA Philippines, and USAID. They discussed trends, opportunities, and issues on mobile phone banking and channel management of mobile money CICOs as merchant partners. They were also provided an overview of the channel management initiative as well as its benefits for the banks.
The Mobile Phone Banking – Channel Management Project is an initiative of RBAP-MABS which is supported by USAID, Mercy Corps, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. MICRA Philippines, an accredited MABS Service Provider, as well as support from Globe Telecom’s GXI, the mobile money issuer of GCASH.
