USAID Officers Get Hands-on Briefing on Mobile Phone Banking Services

Officers of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) were given a firsthand briefing on the mobile phone banking initiative of the USAID-supported Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) Program during a visit with partner bank, PR Savings Bank’s Ortigas Branch on August 11, 2011. The officers included Science & Technology Adviser to the Administrator Alex Dehgan, Environment Officer Kerry Reeves, Teresa Leonardo, Global Climate Change Advisor, and Contracts Officer Technical Representative Teresita Espenilla.

The team was provided with a presentation outlining the Program’s mobile phone banking initiative. As of May 2011, there are some 71 accredited rural banks with over 1,100 branches and other banking offices that are registered to offer mobile phone banking services utilizing the GCASH platform.  These banks have served over 256,000 mobile phone banking clients and customers and have processed more than PhP 12 billion ($ 250 million) in mobile phone banking transactions via GCASH.

Globe Telecom’s mobile commerce subsidiary, G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI), joined the National Convention of the Rural Banking Association of the Philippines (RBAP) to recognize its top 10 rural bank partners in cooperation with Microenterprise Access to Banking Services Program (MABS) supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). RBAP-MABS has been instrumental in giving clients of rural banks long-term solutions to accessing financial services including mobile banking through GCASH.
The 10 GCASH awardees: Philippine Rural Banking Corporation, Green Bank, Cantilan Bank, GM Bank, 1st Valley Bank, Agribusiness Bank, Bangko Kabayan, Rang-Ay Bank, Card Bank and New Rural Bank of Victorias.

RBAP-MABS hosts 3rd Mobile Commerce Summit Asia in Manila

Close to a hundred stakeholders and leaders of the Asian mobile commerce industry – bankers, mobile network operators, mobile commerce providers, and third-party solutions providers – attended the 3rd Mobile Commerce Summit Asia. The Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) Program Chief of Party, Mr. John Owens, chaired the opening session of the two-day conference held on March 24-25 at the Crowne Plaza in Manila.

MABS, GXI, and UTIBA support PR Bank in expanding its Mobile Phone Banking Services in Manila

PR Bank has made the strategic decision to rollout Mobile Phone Banking Services (MPBS) in urban areas, and the expansion of the urban mobile commerce ecosystem, 15 prospective MPBS marketing agents completed a two-day training/workshop that oriented them to the basic features, procedures, and benefits of MPBS and GCASH – the electronic money platform facilitating the services.

The marketers were also given an overview of the products and services offered by Philippine Rural Banking Corporation (PR Bank) – a participating bank of the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS) Program and an accredited G-Xchange Inc. (GXI) partner bank offering the MABS-designed MPBS. They were taught MPBS transaction procedures, and selling and marketing techniques. Trainers from PR Bank, the MABS Program and GXI, the wholly owned mobile commerce subsidiary of Globe Telecom, conducted the training held at PR Bank’s Ortigas Center Branch on October 22 and 23, 2009.
