Citi MOTY Awardees take center stage with the judges during the awards night

The 2011 Maunlad Awardee, one of the two major national winners of the Citi Microentrepreneur of the Year (MOTY) Awards, is a microenterprise borrower of a participating rural bank of the United States Agency for International Development-supported Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) Program. Three other clients of MABS participating banks were also named regional winners.

Cantilan Bank Focusing on Value Chains to Expand Micro Agri Lending

The Mindanao Fruit and Vegetable Summit on October 20-22, 2011 held in Davao City proved to be an opportunity for Cantilan Bank to meet with value chain players in the sector and strike partnerships that promise to be beneficial to both the farmers and the bank.  The summit brought together farmers, buyers and business leaders in a bid to address challenges faced by farmers and agriculture-based companies along the fruits and vegetable commodity value chains. Aside from discussions on benchmarking, best practices, and global marketing, the event featured business matching for producers, buyers, and bankers. The summit was also a venue for aspiring agri-entrepreneurs to learn how to start and grow a farming business.

RBAP-MABS Regional Roundtable 2011 Conference

The Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services will be holding its annual Regional Roundtable conference for rural banks based in Luzon and Visayas on November 9, 2011, 8am-5pm, at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino, Pedro Gil corner M.H. Del Pilar, Malate, Manila.

The Regional Roundtable in Manila is being held back to back with the annual RBAP Symposium. The event promises an exciting opportunity for rural bankers to share and better prepare for in the future as the landscape and trends in microfinance continues its dynamic change.

2010 Regional Roundtable

This year’s theme, “MABS Participating Banks: Moving Forward into the Future”, highlights emerging issues on the horizon and the continuation of the RBAP-MABS Program activities well into the future. The event will discuss areas of interest such as pricing transparency, microfinance credit bureau, strategic partnerships, savings mobilization, micro-insurance, and mobile banking technology.

We expect participants to learn a bit more about:

  1. How rural banks’ effective interest rate compares with other institutions in the Philippines
  2. What are the latest developments regarding the pilot of the microfinance credit bureau in Negros, how this is now being expanded and how rural banks can participate
  3. What the plans are for RBAP-MABS rural banks moving forward with strategic partners
  4. The latest technniques and examples of savings mobilization best practices that rural bankers can use to both open more accounts and encourage their clients to save more
  5. The new microinsurance products and services that rural banks can offer
  6. Latest offers by both the Smart Money and GCASH platforms as well as the use of cash cards and point of sale systems which rural banks can utilize to provide more services to their clients

First Agro-Industrial Rural Bank Inc. (FAIRBank), a rural bank with eleven (11) branches in the province of Cebu, recognized its outstanding microloan clients during a ceremony held on September 16, 2011.  Kaabag sa Pamilya (Helper to the Family) Awards, a bank-wide search for outstanding microentrepreneurs, aims to create awareness for microfinance by giving due recognition and honor to outstanding clients of the bank. The United States Ambassador to the Philippines, Harry K. Thomas Jr., attended the ceremony, and handed out the plaques to the awardees. United States Agency for International Development (USAID)/Philippines Mission Director, Gloria Steele, together with other U.S. Embassy and USAID representatives were also on hand to witness the event.
