RBAP Holds 3rd Microinsurance roundtable meeting for partners & regulators

On March 29, RBAP conducted the 3rd in a series of roundtable meetings designed to convene its partners and stakeholders from the commercial insurance industry, donor institutions and government regulators that are active in the promotion of microinsurance in the country.

Present at the event were nine (9) partner-insurers of RBAP, which include AA International, Bankers Assurance of Malayan Insurance, CocoLife, Country Bankers Group, Manila Bankers Life, MAPRE Insular, MicroEnsure Philippines, Philippine Prudential and Pioneer Insurance. Also in attendance were Deputy Director Gerry Butardo of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Deputy Commissioner Vida Chiong of the Insurance Commission, Executive Director Joselito Almario of the Department of Finance National Credit Council, and Dr. Piedad Geron of the Asian Development Bank. GCASH and Guagua Rural Bank Formalize Partnership

Guagua Rural Bank (GR Bank) officially joins the Philippine mobile phone banking community as it formalized its partnership with G-Xchange Inc. in utilizing the GCASH platform to facilitate its mobile phone banking services (MPBS).
Developed under the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines-Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (RBAP-MABS) program, MPBS involves the use of mobile phones in performing bank transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, remittances and loan payments, among others.
Facilitated by the USAID-supported RBAP-MABS program, GR Bank signed a memorandum of agreement with G-XChange, Inc., Globe Telecom’s mobile commerce subsidiary, on February 18 during the Central Luzon Federation of Rural Bank Management Conference in Hotel Stotsenberg, Clarkfield, Angeles City, Pampanga
With this partnership, GR Bank will utilize GCASH to expand its banking operations. Initially, the bank will accommodate cash-in and cash-out and GCASH Remit services.  With these new services available to its banking clients, GR Bank can now further expand their product portfolio that will assist in widening customer reach without borders.
GR Bank is one of the Top 10 rural banks in the country in terms of resources. This agreement enables the bank to offer mobile phone banking services via the GCASH platform for their clients in the countryside through its network of 15 branches located in Pampanga, Tarlac, Olongapo and Bataan.  GR Bank now joins more than 60 rural banks now offering GCASH-based MPBS in over 885 rural bank branches and other banking offices nationwide.

RBAP, MCPI and ACCION International unite for Microfinance Consumer Protection

The Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP), Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS), Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) and ACCION International recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together in protecting the rights and welfare of financial institutions’ microfinance clients.

The MOU signing on June 19 formalizes the cooperation between the four organizations to undertake the “Beyond Codes” action research project. This project aims to collect information on the consumer protection codes of conduct and their implementation in selected countries, including the Philippines. Through these information and experiences, the project will develop a consensus of pro-consumer best practices to be promoted worldwide.

A private non-profit organization, ACCION International aims to provide financial assistance to the poor who want to work their way out of poverty. With 35 partner microfinance organizations in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean, ACCION has already loaned more than $23.4 billion to over 6.2 million people since 1998. As a microfinance organization, it also provides business trainings and financial services to poor people, helping them start their own businesses and move up the economic ladder.

RBAP’s participation in the “Beyond Codes” project will be implemented through the MABS Program. Supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the MABS Program assists rural banks in developing their capacity to profitably provide banking services to microentrepreneurs. Green Bank and MicroEnsure Philippines set to pilot Weather Index Crop Insurance

MABS facilitates One Network Bank’s partnership with GCASH

On May 15, 2009, MABS facilitated One Network Bank’s (ONB) signing of a memorandum of agreement with Globe’s whole-owned subsidiary, G-Xchange Inc. (GXI).
