Inter-Pacific Bar Association Conference highlights the changing face of microfinance

During the recent five-day 2009 Annual Conference of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA), MABS Chief of Party John Owens along with ADB representatives Peter Knoll and Betty Wilkinson provided presentations to lawyers from all over the Asia-Pacific region about “Banking at the Base of the Pyramid: How Microfinance is Changing and How You can be Involved.”

The IPBA is an international association composed of lawyers who live or work in the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s annual conference included a session on microfinance and its transition from being a tool for the alleviation of poverty to being a new market for banks and other commercial institutions. In this session, MABS Chief of Party discussed how new technologies and industry players are contributing to the redefinition of microfinance.
