SNACK FOOD PRODUCERS ON THE MOVE WITH MABS LOAN

In a nipa-covered awning behind their home in Tandag, Surigao del Sur, Victoria and Carlos Lim manufacture chicharon and ampaw (popped rice) to earn a livelihood for their family. Mr. and Mrs. Lim inherited the business from Carlos’ parents and decided in 1998 to grow it with the help of their children.

The demand for chicharon and ampaw exceeded initial expectations. To meet the rising popularity of the snacks, the couple applied for a KITA loan from the Rural Bank of Cantilan. Through its participation in the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS) program, the Rural Bank of Cantilan had developed and designed a loan product to help microentrepreneurs like the Lims build their businesses. Short for Kita Tigum Asenso (Income and Savings for Progress), the KITA loan became a popular product of the bank.

Now on their 5th loan, Mr. and Mrs. Lim employ three regular cooks, and up to 14 packers who are paid on an output basis.

On a given week, they are able to sell 6,000 packs of chicharon and ampaw to large grocery stores in Tandag City and in the nearby towns of Cantilan and Carrascal in Surigao del Sur.

Profits from the chicharon and ampaw sales enable the Lims to send all their eight children to school. Very recently, the couple purchased a truck to replace the old motorcycle that they used for deliveries. Victoria and Carlos Lim dream one day of building a nice home for their family.

The Lims were chosen as Citibank’s 1st Runners-up for the “Microentrepreneur of the Year” Award for Mindanao for 2002. Mrs. Lim says they will use the P25,000 prize money as additional capital, and for the repair of their motorcycle.
