RBAP Conducts National MABS Seminars

Manila - During November of 2003, the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines (RBAP) Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS) Program offered the RBAP-MABS Microfinance Seminar for Senior Managers. More than 450 presidents and senior managers from 245 rural banks across the Philippines attended the seminars.

The MABS Microfinance Seminars were organized in cooperation with rural bank federations throughout the country. Training was conducted by MABS Service Providers (MSPs), who are authorized by RBAP to provide MABS Approach Training and Technical Services (MATTS). The MABS Approach to Microfinance is a systematic, step-by-step process followed by banks as they develop the full capability to profitably offer loan and deposit services to microenterprises.

Since 1998, more than 114 rural bank units in the Philippines have implemented the MABS Approach and are now profitably providing services to microenterprises. Collectively, these banks have made more than PhP 3 billion in loans to more than 108,000 micro-borrowers and have expanded deposit services to more than 194,000 new microdepositors.

The seminar introduced microfinance basics to senior managers while providing tangible tools that can be immediately used to determine the viability of establishing microfinance operations within their banks. The sessions assisted participants in determining what exactly will be required for each bank to design its own microfinance products and achieve profitability. It also included a detailed institutional self-assessment tool for banks to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and potential market opportunities.
