2nd Basic Course for Microfinance Trainers
Twenty-four prospective microfinance trainers from 12 Mindanao participating banks completed the 2nd Basic Course for Microfinance Trainers last April 2-5, 2003 in Toril, Davao City.
During trainers’ courses, MABS technical specialists provide the materials and basic course used by MABS to train account officers. Participants will, in turn, organize and conduct the same basic course to new account officers in their own bank.
For the 2nd trainers’ course, MABS’ technical staff conducted sessions on microfinance best practices, microloan products, zero tolerance toward delinquency, credit and background investigation, cashflow analysis, market research and internal control procedures.

Service Provider Trainees Complete 2nd MABS Approach Module
MABS service provider trainees completed the second module of the MABS Approach, the Market Research Module. The training included sessions on the basics of market research, determining market size, conducting market surveys, survey data processing and analysis.

The trainees represent five prospective MABS service providers currently training in conjunction with the 6th rollout banks.
DAR Officials Oriented on the MABS Approach
Mr. Ed de Castro, MABS Regional Manager for Southern Mindanao, presented the MABS Approach to Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) officials and key program implementers last April 30, 2003 in Santo Tomas, Davao del Norte. The presentation was part of a microfinance orientation workshop for DAR sponsored by the National Credit Council. The workshop also included an exposure visit to the Rural Bank of Santo Tomas (RBST), a recent MABS EAGLE Awardee and one of the program’s pilot banks.
Mrs. Lourdes Pineda, RBST’s Bank Compliance Officer, gave a presentation on the banks’ microfinance operations.
Ms. Pineda also presented the bank’s microfinance product, the SAKĀ (Saganang Ani, Kita at Asenso which translates to ‘Bountiful Harvest and Earnings’) loan. The product, introduced in June 2002, is designed for rice farmers in Santo Tomas. As part of the exposure visit, the DAR team interviewed SAKĀ borrowers.
NFIS Training Held in Quezon City
The Bankers Association of the Philippines’ Credit Bureau (BAP-CB) conducted training on the use of the Negative File Information System last April 30, 2003 in Cubao, Quezon City to members of the Federation of Metro Manila Rural Bankers. 22 participants from 11 banks attended the training.
The series of NFIS orientation and training is a joint initiative of the MABS Program and the BAP-CB.
