Chicharon Maker from Cantilan Reaps Citibank Award

Victoria Lim is 1st Runner-up in Mindanao for Citibank’s Microentrepreneur of the Year Awards. To cope with the increased demand for chicharon and ampaw (popped rice), she applied for a KITA loan from the Rural Bank of Cantilan in Surigao del Sur.

Through its participation in the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services (MABS) program, the Rural Bank of Cantilan had developed and designed a loan product to help microentrepreneurs grow their business. Since January 1999, rural banks participating under the MABS program have disbursed more than 187,000 loans amounting to P1.8 billion, to more than 70,000 microenterprises. The USAID-supported MABS Program provides technical assistance and training to rural banks to develop their capability to profitably provide microfinance savings and credit services to microentrepreneurs.
