PEDDLING TO PROSPERITY

Hard work, a cheerful disposition and several small loans got Alsie Angni where she is today. Peddling well-crafted, ready-to-wear clothing purchased from larger cities, Alsie visits about 50 loyal clients weekly to service their needs in her rural town of Tandag in Surigao del Sur.

Alsie Angni is pleased with her MABS loans
A series of small loans ranging from 3,000 to 15,000 pesos over the past year has helped Alsie purchase clothing in bulk, paying for them up-front, and re-selling these items to her clients. Since then, her sales and client list have increased dramatically.

“I wanted to increase my business,” explains Alsie. “A MABS loan helped me do so. My job is easy to manage because I have very few costs, but accessing money to buy in bulk was my greatest challenge.”

Alsie takes a bus from Tandag to Butuan, Cebu or Davao to purchase clothing. These trips can take up to 10 hours, but Alsie does not have to worry about costs such as vehicle maintenance and fuel. Working from home frees her from worries about rent, or paying employees. The convenience of her work allows Alsie’s business to grow easily. Her dream is to purchase a motorcycle in the near future.

“The success of my sales has helped me save more for my daughter. I can now save for her education and her future.”

The towns in Surigao del Sur benefit from MABS-designed loans offered by the Rural Bank of Cantilan. By making capital available to small businesses, MABS participant banks help raise profit and income levels and create jobs at the grassroots.
