A group composed of 15 managers from an Indonesian government-owned pawnshop completed a two-day study visit held from December 13-14 in Manila. The study visit oriented the group to the Philippine microfinance and pawnshop industries and to remittance services

The Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines and MABS briefed the group on the Philippines’ rural banking system and microfinance sector and on the MABS Program. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) officials oriented the study mission to the regulatory framework governing the operations of micro-finance institutions and pawnshops. First Macro Bank, a MABS PB, gave a presentation on its MABS-assisted microfinance program and on its remittance services. The Indonesian study group also visited several First Macro Bank microfinance clients.
Western Union and Uniteller, two of the country’s biggest remittance services companies, briefed the group on their remittance products and services as well as their partnerships with institutions, among them rural banks, which provide sub-agency remittance services.
