A delegation comprising 27 rural bankers from 20 MABS PBs attended an international seminar on microfinance sponsored by the BRI held December 1-3 in Bali, Indonesia.

During the seminar, the delegation was briefed on the BRI’s Unit Desa (Village Unit) System and microfinance practices. The seminar also examined strategic issues on the transformation of the BRI-Unit system, trends and future directions of microfinance, the role of microfinance in the rural financial system and local economy development, and innovations in microfinance, specifically, the latest developments in information and communications technology. During the field visit held December 6-7, the group observed BRI’s microbanking divisions (Unit Desa) and held discussions with BRI microbanking officials and microbanking clients.
Established in 1984, BRI’s Unit Desa is one of the most successful microfinance institutions in the world, consistently making a profit with a very low delinquency rate. BRI regularly conducts international study visits to provide microfinance practitioners with an opportunity to learn about BRI’s success and best practices.
